Pte Murphy was born at Crich, worked at Ambergate, and after the war his parents lived at 2 Kerry St, Chaddesden (Nottingham Road Area), Derby, DE21 6DS, NGR: SK 36813 36862, (From online digital mapping.) (Map opens in new window.) It seems likely that the plaque was at this address before being acquired by the museum.

Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.

Description:

A brass plaque on a wooden backboard. The plaque is in the shape of a shield with a narrow raised border and an incised inscription in different styles of capital lettering. The wooden backboard is also in the shape of a shield and has a chamfered edge. The plaque was accompanied by a caption with explanatory and biographical information.

History
Unknown date: The plaque is assumed to have been presented to Pte Murphy's parents by the Amalgamated Wire-drawers.

c1987: The memorial passed to Derby Museum, was allocated accession number 1987-170/1, and put into storage.

10 June - 23 July, 2017: The plaque was displayed as part of the 'Remembered in Derby' exhibition.

19th June 2017: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson. It was in fair condition and well cared for.
