The memorial is on a traffic island at the junction with Marple Rd and Glossop Rd (A626).

Overall condition: Fair.


Description:

A sandstone obelisk on a pedestal and base. The monolithic truncated obelisk has several metal hooks from which wreaths may be hung, and previously had three street lamps at the top. The square sandstone ashlar pedestal has curved projections on the 9 and 3 o'clock faces, each with a deep vertical hole which may have been intended for flagpoles or other devices. The whole surmounts a sandstone ashlar base and is surrounded by a paved and kerbed surface with traffic signs. The WW1 inscription and names are on the 6 o'clock face of the obelisk and the WW2 addition is on the 6 o'clock face of the pedestal, all incised in upright capital roman lettering coloured black.

History
6th April, 1920: The memorial was unveiled by Maj S Hill Woods

1976: The memorial lies within the Charlesworth Conservation Area first designated in that year.

22nd July, 2014: The memorial was listed Grade II, Heritage List for England number 1419953.

Winter 2015/16?: The memorial was seriously damaged in a road traffic collision. The pedestal had been dislodged and split into its two halves and the obelisk had been further dislodged. The obelisk and pedestal both had several large chips and corners broken off.

5th April, 2016: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was still fenced off following the road traffic collision and was at risk.

By 20th September, 2016: The memorial was visited by Roy Branson when it was seen to have been repaired and restored to its proper alignment.
