Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.

Description:

A cast bronze female figure representing Victory on a tall pedestal which bears the names of the fallen on bronze plaques. The female figure has one arm outstretched and the other is held high clutching a victor's laurel wreath. She is standing on a globe with one foot on the neck of a defeated snake representing evil. The figure surmounts a tapered sandstone pillar rising from a cruciform plinth and with tapered swept buttresses to the two sides, the whole surmounting a large square five-stepped base. Each of the four main faces bears a bronze plaque with inscriptions and names in raised upright capital roman lettering. The 6 and 12 o'clock faces of the pillar bear an inscription in upright capital block lettering in relief and the 9 and 3 o'clock faces bear a cast bronze laurel wreath at the head. The artist's name is incised on the base of the figure.

History
15th January, 1921: An agreement was signed by Francis Edward Lord Howard, Baron Howard of Glossop and the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Glossop regarding the erection of the memorial in Norfolk Square.

c1921: The figure was made by Vernon March, sculptor.

31st March, 1922: The memorial was unveiled by Lord Howard.

1950s: The two WW2 plaques were added.

1970: The memorial lies within the Norfolk Square Conservation Area first designated in that year.

22nd May, 2000: The memorial was listed Grade II, Heritage List for England number 1384285.

20th September 2016: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition and cared for. The inscriptions were transcribed by Annette Carter.
