Introduction

There are many projects relating to war memorials, military graves and the biographical research of military personnel.  We have selected just a few relating to national projects and to some concerning Derbyshire and adjacent counties. (Some sites previously listed here have been deleted because the links have become broken.)

Armed Forces Memorial:  A searchable database of all members of the armed forces who have died in service since 1945.

Anglo Boer War Register:  A pay per view  database  with details of over 145,500 men and women who served in the British Imperial Forces during the war in southern Africa, including soldiers, sailors, nurses and civilians.

Chesterfield Sherwoods on the Somme:  The story of the men of Chesterfield who served and died with Battalions of the Sherwood Forester Regiment during the Battle of the Somme.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission:  The search page for military and civilian casualties and for cemeteries of the two world wars.

Derbyshire:  The Derby and Derbyshire War Memorials Project provides biographies developed from memorials throughout the county.

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland: A project about war memorials considered to be at risk.

Manchester Regiment: Boer War memorials to the Manchester Regiment in various locations.

My Fast Forum: This Forum has photographs of many memorials in Derbyshire and elsewhere.

Nottinghamshire: Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour - a project by Nottinghamshire County Council collecting names on WW1 memorials throughout the county.

Photographs of War Graves: The War Graves Photographic Project lists photographs of war graves, individual memorials, MoD graves and family memorials of serving military personnel from WWI to the present day.

Roll of Honour: The  introduction page to this national catalogue of mainly public monument war memorials.

Roll of Honour - Far East: Information about Commonwealth service personnel who died in the Far East during the Second World War and cemeteries in those countries.

Royal Navy and Royal Marines: Casualty lists from before 1914 to 2008

The National Archives: The home page of one of the largest archival collections in the world including UK military service records.

The Sherwood Foresters - Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment: UK Parliament:  The All Party Parliamentary Group consists of members from both houses and exists to promote and support the protection, conservation and interpretation of war graves, war memorials and battlefield sites.

War Memorials Trust:  The trust  works to protect and conserve war memorials in the UK and can offer technical conservation advice as well as grants for conservation and restoration.

Western Front Association:  The association was formed with the aim of furthering interest in the First World War and perpetuating the memory of those involved in France and Flanders.

WW1 Cemeteries  A guide and index to military cemeteries and memorials, mainly in Belgium and France, but including some in Great Britain and other countries.
