Location details:
The memorial is south of the path from the gate to the church. That's left of the path when entering, and about half way along it.
Type
Overall type: Bench. Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible.


Description:

A wood and metal seat with a brass plaque on the backrest. The plain oblong plaque has an incised inscription in upright sentence case block lettering infilled in black.

of Taddington and Priestcliffe to
commemorate the life and work of John.
No words can express the High Esteem
in which he was held. He is missed.

History and Conservation
17 April 1951: The memorial lies within the Peak District National Park designated on that date.

c2006: The bench was given by the brother and sister of Cdr Chapman.

8th May, 2014: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition and was legible.

Comments
No conflicts or actions are stated in the inscription but Cdr Chapman would have served in the Royal Navy in the period after WW2 when a number of conflicts occurred. The memorial does not fall within the criteria used by most heritage organisations but is included here because of the above, because it clearly refers to his (presumably naval) work, and to create a record which might otherwise be lost.
