Location details:
The memorial is set within a paved area in an oval plot of land (previously occupied by several properties) at the junction of Old Rd and Stocks Brow (formerly known as Stocks or The Stocks).
Type
Overall type: Cross. Overall condition: Good. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

A pale grey granite cross on a pedestal and base. The wheel cross is finely dressed on all faces and has intertwined strapwork in relief on the 6 o'clock face in the Celtic or Anglo-Saxon style, with an incised inscription on a panel towards the base. It surmounts a square plinth with a carved wreath on the 6 o'clock face, undecorated on the other faces. This surmounts a heavy truncated pyramidal pedestal of coursed rusticated ashlar with inset tablets on the 6 o'clock face. At the foot is a square two-stepped base, also of coursed rusticated ashlar with a single small tablet inset on the 6 o'clock face. The incised inscriptions are in upright lettering coloured black: that on the cross shaft is in mixed capital and sentence-case, the remainder in capital lettering.

History and Conservation
17th April, 1951: The Peak District National Park was designated. The memorial lies within its area.

Unknown date: The Tintwistle Conservation Area was designated (within the Peak District National Park). The memorial lies within it.

October, 1992: The lettering was reported to be weathered.

April, 2005: Refurbishment was proposed. It is not known if this was completed.

19th June, 2018: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in good condition and cared for, although some black colouring was last from the inscription resulting in some letters being difficult to discern.
