Location details:
The memorial is on the cliff edge of a gritstone edge in heather moorland about 2.5km east of Baslow.

Description:

A gritstone obelisk surmounted by a ball. Inscriptions are incised on the 6 and 3 o’clock faces of the obelisk and on the rock surface near the base. A later metal plaque is set into the rock surface near the base. Three large natural rocks nearby, supposedly resembling ships’ prows, are known as the Three Ships and have ships’ names incised on their faces.

1810: The memorial is believed to have been donated by John Brightman of Baslow.

12th September 2008: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition.

Comments

The monument is known to commemorate the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson, Baron Nelson of the Nile, who died on 21st October 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar on board HMS Victory, although he is not actually named on it.
