Description:

Formerly an endowed bed accompanied by a commemorative wooden board. The endowment is presumed lost in the intricacies of the NHS funding system over the last 70 years or so. It was normal practice for commemorative boards, plaques etc to be mounted on a wall near the appointed bed, and it is presumed that this board was so located in the hospital. It is also presumed to have been removed to storage during the demolition of the hospital and the construction of the health centre, but it is now displayed on the wall in the entrance. It comprises an oblong panel bearing the inscription in raised capital block lettering, and has moulded cornices above and below. To each side is a flat muntin with a broad but shallow central groove. Above the top cornice is a broken swans-neck pediment with acanthus leaves carved in relief in the tympana; and in the central break is an upright panel bearing a depiction of Florence Nightingale carved in relief in the "lady with the lamp" pose. The wood is oak throughout and is stained dark brown.
