The garden is on the south side of King St, bordered by Strutt St and Cheapside.

Overall type: Obelisk.


Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is well cared for.

Description:

A white granite obelisk with supplementary tablets for subsequent conflicts.

The obelisk has a moulded base plinth and surmounts a battered square pedestal on a further moulded plinth and a three stepped base; the whole founded on concrete. The 6 o'clock face of the pedestal has a ropework border and bears the WW1 inscription, while the three other faces each have the WW1 names in two columns, all inlaid in upright capital block lettering.

A recumbent oblong white granite tablet lies on the 6 o'clock face of the steps and bears the WW2 inscription and names in two columns of incised upright capital block lettering coloured black. The tablet is surrounded by a frame of twisted wrought iron. An oblong grey granite tablet is affixed to the bottom of the 6 o'clock face of the obelisk and bears the post WW2 inscription and name incised in upright capital block lettering coloured black.

History and Conservation
c1923: The memorial was unveiled by Alderman G H Strutt.

7th November, 1948:  The WW2 addition was unveiled by Mrs Marion Broster.

1975-1992: The memorial lies within the Belper and Milford Conservation area designated and extended during that period.

December 2001: The memorial lies within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site inscribed on that month.

7th February, 2013: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition and cared for.
