Sgt. WILLIAM GREGG VC, DCM, MM
|
William Gregg (1890-1969) was born in Heanor and was the first British soldier ever to receive the three highest awards for gallantry.
He received the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1917 and was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1918 for “most conspicuous bravery and brilliant leadership in action” having taken command of his company which was under heavy fire. He captured two enemy machine gun posts and by his actions saved the situation at a critical time.
