| IN MEMORY OF THOMAS WALL, WHO DIED FEBRUARY 11TH. 1853, AGED 67 YEARS. HIS REMAINS LIE IN THE ADJOINING GROUND. THROUGH THE MERCY OF GOD HE WAS PERMITTED TO RETURN TO HIS NATIVE TOWN, AFTER A LONG ABSENCE SPENT, IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY. HE HAD THE HONOR OF BEING ENGAGED IN MOST OF THE GREAT ACTIONS DURING THE PENINSULAR WAR, WAS APPOINTED COLOR SERGEANT IN H.M.95TH. RIFLE BRIGADE, AND HIGHLY ESTEEMED BY HIS OFFICERS, AND COMRADES, HE MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE CHARACTER OF A BRAVE SOLDIER. SEVERELY WOUNDED IN SEVERAL ACTIONS, HE WAS PRESENTED WITH THE MEDAL AWARDED BY THE GOVERNMENT, HAVING THE FOLLOWING VICTORIES INSCRIBED UPON ITS CLASPS. |

History 1850s?: The memorial was made by Lomas & Sons, monumental masons of Bakewell. 17th April, 1951: The church lies in the Peak District National Park designated on that date. Unknown date: The church lies within the Winster Conservation Area. 12th July 1967: The church was listed Grade II, Heritage List for England number 1335208. 22nd February 2016: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson. It was in fair condition, there was a crack in the bottom left corner of the frame but was otherwise well cared for. |
