Location details:
The church is on the east side of Mapleton Road near the junction with Yerley Hill. The gates are outside, at the roadside.
Mapleton Rd is also known as Ashbourne Rd. The village name is pronounced Mappleton and is so spelt on some modern maps but historically it was spelt Mapleton. No road names are given on Ordnance Survey maps and those used may not have been formally designated.

Overall type: Gates Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible and the memorial is cared for.


Description:

A pair of oaken hand gates with an inscription carved in relief across the top rails in decorative upright capital lettering.

(A wrought iron arch and lamp over the gates is dated 1978 and is believed not related to the memorial.)

History and Conservation
Unknown date: The memorial was procured and installed.

February, 1981: The Mapleton Conservation Area was first designated. The gates lie within it.

20th November, 2009: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition and cared for although the top rail was beginning to rot .

26th September, 2019: The memorial was revisited by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It remained in fair condition and cared for. The rot on the top rail was not significantly worse.
