Overall condition: Fair. The inscription is legible.


Description:

Additional lettering on a headstone on a family grave. The upright polished grey granite headstone has a shallow triangular arch top, battered sides and the wreath badge of the Royal Flying Corps in shallow relief at the head. The incised inscription is in upright capital block lettering coloured white. The headstone surmounts a plain oblong granite base.

PER ARDUA AD ASTRA
IN UNFADING MEMORY OF
GILBERT SUDBURY HALL
AGED 25 YEARS.
SON OF ROBERT AND ELIZABETH HALL,
SEC. LIEUTENANT AND FLYING OFFICER
IN THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS.
HIS BIPLANE WAS SHOT DOWN ON NOVEMBER
THE 20TH. 1916, AND ON THE 30TH. HE DIED
FROM THE INJURIES HE HAD RECEIVED.
HE WAS INTERRED BY THE ENEMY, WITH
MILITARY HONOURS, IN THE CEMETERY
OF NOTRE DAME, CAMBRAI, FRANCE.
OH DEAR BRAVE HEART GOD BLESS THEE.

History
October 1980: The memorial lies within the Old Matlock Conservation Area first designated in that month.

16th March, 2009: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson and Alan Willmot. It was in fair condition although some of the lettering towards the foot of the headstone was losing its colour.

12th October, 2016: The memorial was rephotographed by Roy Branson. It was in fair condition.
