Location details:
The park is on the southern side of the northern section of South Ave. It is known as South Avenue Park or South Avenue Recreation Ground.
Type
Overall type: Park Overall condition: Good. The memorial is cared for.


Description:

A roughly oblong parcel of land, about 170m in an east-west direction by about 68m in a north-south direction and comprising about 0.95ha. Previously known as Horse Croft or Horse Close, the land was formerly identified as OS Parcel 436 on the 1914 edition of the 1:2500 Ordnance Survey Plan. The land is mainly laid out to grass play areas but with a childrens's play area near the northeast corner, and a number of trees along the northern boundary and towards the western end, five of which were planted in memory of the fallen of two world wars. An oblong information panel bearing historical details of the site is mounted on a metal post beside the northeast entrance.

History and Conservation
March 1919: A committee was formed to collect money for a war memorial.

1922: The war memorial committee purchased the parcel of land for £180 from the estate of the late J R Staples.

2nd March, 1922: The deeds for the land, which was to be used forever as a recreation ground, were presented to the parish council .

Spring 2019: An information board was procured by Spondon Archive (a consortium of the Historical Society and Village Improvement Committee). It was developed by Derek Hathaway; funded by the Coop Community Fund and made by Rendition Graphics of Chesterfield.

22nd June, 2019: The information board was unveiled by Gwen Swainson, former member of Spondon Parish Council, and David Palmer, President of the Spondon Branch, Royal British Legion. Also present was Sgt Neil Orton of C Company, 4th Battalion, Mercian Regiment.

22nd June and 5th July, 2019: The memorial was surveyed by Roy Branson.
